According to the "Code for Design and Construction of Gas Stations for Automobiles", primary gas stations are generally not located in urban areas. The minimum distance between the oil tanks of the secondary gas stations (the fuel storage tank volume is 31-45 cubic meters) from the residential area should be more than 12 meters. The oil storage tanks of the three-stage gas stations (the upper limit of the storage tank volume is 30 cubic meters) are at least 10 meters away from the residential area.

Because the petroleum products sold by gas stations have the characteristics of flammable, explosive, volatile, leaky, and easy to accumulate static charges, gas stations take "safety" as the first criterion. Pyrotechnics are strictly prohibited in gas stations, and operations that may produce sparks are strictly prohibited. It is strictly forbidden to fill gasoline in car vaporizers and casks. All stations must be turned off when refueling at all stations. All dangerous goods are prohibited from entering stations, while maintaining safety with surroundings distance. The so-called "safety distance" is calculated from the tanker. Gas stations are divided into two and three levels. Generally, cities do not approve the first level. Ordinary civil buildings have different fire resistance levels: the first and second levels are brick-concrete structures and the third level. It is a brick-wood structure, and the fourth grade is a wooden structure. The safety distance is generally about 10 meters.

 In addition to a certain distance between the gas station and the dwellings, a certain distance from public buildings is also required. This distance is higher than that of dwellings, and the distance to important public buildings must be 50 meters. General business premises, office buildings, dual-use commercial and residential buildings, high-rise civil buildings, etc. are classified as a class of protective objects second only to important public buildings. The safety distance from the secondary gas station should be 20 meters, and the safety distance from the tertiary gas station should be 16 meters.
