Three test methods for the tightness of oil tank walls

Date: Nov 22, 2019
The tightness of the oil tank wall is a problem that cannot be underestimated. This is related to the safety hazard of oil leakage when storing oil and the service life of the tank. There are three test methods for the tightness of the tank wall:

Kerosene leak test method. The splicing and butt welds on the side of the tank with the continuous weld welded on the outside and the welded weld on the inside shall be coated with kerosene for rigor inspection. On the side of the weld inspection, remove the dirt and rust, and apply a white powder emulsion or a white clay emulsion. After drying, spray at least two kerosene on the weld on the other side, 10 minutes apart. Kerosene has a strong penetrating power and can penetrate tiny pores.

If the kerosene is infiltrated for 12 hours, no spots appear on the surface of the white welded joint, and the weld is in compliance with the requirements; if the ambient temperature is below 0 °C, no spots should appear after 24 hours. In order to speed up the inspection in winter, it is allowed to heat the kerosene of 60~70 °C in advance to spray the wetted weld. At this time, no spots should appear within 1 hour.
Flushing test method. Whether it is a single-layer oil storage tank or a double-layer oil fuel tank, the water-filling test should be carried out after completion or overhaul. In the process of filling the water, the wall panel and the strip-by-piece weld are visually inspected section by section. After filling the water to the highest operating level, hold the pressure for 48h. If there is no abnormal leakage or deformation, the tightness of the tank wall is qualified.

Detection of the wall thickness of the tank. Ground oil tanks are mainly detected by magnetic eddy current method or ultrasonic wave. The new generation of tank wall detection is represented by the tank detection robot developed by Zhejiang college students. The ultrasonic flaw detection sensor is installed on the wall-climbing robot, and the remote control is completed by the operator. It is doubled in manual efficiency and suitable for spherical oil tank inspection.
