The final discharge pressure of a pump increases with the number of steps. These pumps have the unusual capacity to create increasing pressures with each stage, but the flow range remains constant for a certain rpm.

Multistage centrifugal pumps contain several liquid chambers (or stages) connected in sequence. Fluid enters the first chamber at suction line pressure and exits at a higher pressure. After leaving the first stage, the fluid enters the second stage, where the pressure is boosted even higher.
