How do vane pumps work?

The eccentric mounting location of the rotor causes the volume between neighboring vanes to fluctuate during a rotation cycle. This causes the pumping action. There are two major types of vane pumps: sliding vane and flexible vane.

In a sliding vane pump, the vanes are inserted into radial slots on a cylindrical rotor. When the pump is motionless, the vanes remain in their slots. However, when the shaft rotates quickly enough (about 700 rpm), the vanes move outwards under centrifugal force, making close contact with a perforated cam ring surrounding the casing wall.
