LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) is a mixture of propane and butane, usually accompanied by small amounts of propylene and butene. Ethanethiol, a strong odorant, is added to LPG so that LPG leaks can be easily detected. Liquefied petroleum gas is produced when crude oil is refined, or the gas that evaporates from the extraction of oil or natural gas. Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is often mistaken for propane. In fact, LPG is a mixture of oil and natural gas under appropriate pressure and exists in a liquid state at room temperature. In the U.S. and Canada, a blend of these two substances is generally considered to consist primarily of propane, while many European countries have only 50% or less of propane in their LPG.
